TIBERIVS CLAVDIVS NERO, born in 42 BC to Livia Drusilla and his father of like name, became the stepson of Augustus when he married Livia in 38 BC. He entered the military and gained distinction from about 20 BC until 6 BC, when he went into voluntary exile in Rhodes, possibly to get away from a very unhappy forced state marriage. He was recalled in 2 AD and groomed to succeed Augustus, which he did on August 19, 14. His reign was mild and marred only by the conspiracy of his Praetorian Praefect Sejanus. Tiberius moved to Capri in 26, and ruled from there until his natural death on March 16, 37. |
