LUCILLA
Wife of Lucius Verus
Augusta: 164-169 A.D.
| ANNIA AVRELIA GALERIA LVCILLA,
born in 150 to Marcus Aurelius and Faustina Jr., was engaged by her father
to his co-Augustus Lucius Verus in 161, but due to her age the marriage
was postponed until 164. Verus was dissolute and the marriage was unhappy.
He died suddenly in February, 169, but Aurelius again arranged a marriage
in 169 to Ti. Claudius Pompeianus, a serious older man. She began affairs,
including one with her brother Commodus, but his wife Crispina soon asserted
her position, and Lucilla began a plot against them. It failed, and she
was exiled to Capri in 182 and soon executed. (From MONETA, available from www.numus.com) |
