05-CB_01_25_09_3.jpgLot # 5305 viewsCB- Open $5 S&H $2 US/CAN, $3 O/S, Augustus, 27BC-14AD, Bronze As, RIC-I-20-S, struck 25-23BC at Emerita, 8.21 grams, 27 mm. Nice VF THIS COIN IS QUITE SCARCE! Paypal sales@commonbronze.com
Obv: CAESAR AVGV TRIB POTEST - Bare head of Augustus facing right
Rev: P CARISIVS LEG AVGVSTI - Legend in three lines Scarce and quite choice for this difficult and early coinage of Augustus. Among Augustus' first 'Imperial' issues are eas and denarii naming on their reverse P. Carisius, his legatus pro praetore in Lusitana (Portugal). Carisius founded the city of Emerita Augusta (Mérida) as a staging point for Augustus' campaign to pacify northwestern Spain - a feat that had not been achieved after decades of campaigns under the Republic. The city derived its name from its other main purpose, a home for demobilized soldiers known as emeriti.
