14-coin_1469.jpgLot # 14147 viewsJack. Open $99, Lucilla, w. L Verus, 161-9 AD, AR denarius, Obv: Draped bust right LUCILLA AVGVSTA, Rev: Hilaritas stg left, holding long palm branch and cornucopiae, HILARITAS. RSC 28. Regular Shipping free, Paypal to Profjack2005@yahoo.com
The first female of the many children of M. Aurelius and Faustina Jr. - and one of the few that survived childhood - Lucilla was betrothed very young to her father's ruling colleague, L. Verus, and likewise married and widowed early. Even though her three children ended up playing apparently no significant historical role, her political involvement didn't end there; in fact, the recent prominent motion picture Gladiator - despite an obvious license in historical synthesis - vividly underscores that point. Her true and brutal end, however, came shortly after the accession of her ruthless brother Commodus, following an unsuccessful plot against him in which both she and his wife Crispina were implicated; it took another 10 years before finally a successful coup, at the hands of a gladiator, disposed of the emperor. coinlord

32-coin_1476.jpgLot # 32131 viewsJack. Open $69, Julia Soaemias, mother of Elagabalus, 218-22 AD, AR denarius. Obv: Draped bust right; IVLIA SOAEMIAS AVG. Rev: Venus stg w/ scepter & apple, star in field, VENUS CAELESTIS. SR 2170. Regular Shipping is free. Paypal to Profjack2005@yahoo.com
The coinage of Julia Soaemias is rather scarce, and was issued only sporadically during the short reign of her son Elagabalus. A devoted worshipper of the Eastern deity Baal like her son, they were both in the shadow of the powerful matriarch - Soaemias' mother Julia Maesa. On the reverse here, Venus is shown in one of her less obvious incarnations here, "caelestis" (i.e. "celestial" - of the skies), underscored by the star in the right field - a device which appears seldom and with a purpose on Roman coinage of this era, as opposed to the common later use as a mint control mark. coinlord
