I had only heard rumors of these countermarked issues and had never seen one before. The countermark is so subtle that I almost missed it. I could find exactly zero information and zero images online. History of the Island: Guadeloupe was discovered by Columbus for Spain in 1493 but claimed by the French Company of the Islands of America in 1635. Grande Terre is the name of the eastern half of the island. Efforts to colonize the island failed, so it was given to the French crown in 1674. The British occupied the island twice, 1759-63 and 1810-16. It was around the time of the second British occupation that the island experienced the severe coin shortage resulting in this countermarked series.
