Exquisite detail on both sides. The reverse cannot be viewed but as some of the more cynical Roman propaganda under the morally bankrupt Caracalla, as the "eternal concord" (among the imperial couple) declared and depicted there was to last no more than a couple of years. Following the framing and execution of her once powerful father at hands of her husband, Plautilla was first downgraded to "estranged wife" and exiled, only to be executed once he was to assume supreme power in 212 AD. coinlord

23-coin_1471.jpgLot # 23114 viewsJack. Open $ 69. Faustina II, w. M Aurelius, 161-175 AD), AR denarius, 161 AD, 2.41g. Obv: Bust right, FAVSTINA AVGVSTA, Rev: Draped throne with two baby boys, SAECVLI FELICIT. SR 1500, RSC 190. Regular Shipping free. Paypal to Profjack2005@yahoo.com
Comment: Another interesting reverse appropriate for Faustina, the mother of 13. She bore two sets of twins, and this coin is in reference to the second case, the birth of Antoninus and Commodus in 161 AD. Twins in general (and certainly their successful birth to begin with) were still surrounded by a certain mystique in Roman antiquity, and correspondingly, that event is specifically addressed here, as a "joyful era". But most of Faustina's children died young, including Antoninus, and the other twin - Commodus, the only surviving male child and eventual successor to the throne - marked an era that was anything but joyful. coinlord

32-coin_1476.jpgLot # 32131 viewsJack. Open $69, Julia Soaemias, mother of Elagabalus, 218-22 AD, AR denarius. Obv: Draped bust right; IVLIA SOAEMIAS AVG. Rev: Venus stg w/ scepter & apple, star in field, VENUS CAELESTIS. SR 2170. Regular Shipping is free. Paypal to Profjack2005@yahoo.com
The coinage of Julia Soaemias is rather scarce, and was issued only sporadically during the short reign of her son Elagabalus. A devoted worshipper of the Eastern deity Baal like her son, they were both in the shadow of the powerful matriarch - Soaemias' mother Julia Maesa. On the reverse here, Venus is shown in one of her less obvious incarnations here, "caelestis" (i.e. "celestial" - of the skies), underscored by the star in the right field - a device which appears seldom and with a purpose on Roman coinage of this era, as opposed to the common later use as a mint control mark. coinlord
