08-Caracalla.jpgLot # 8170 viewsEd Spoon! - Caracalla, 198 - 217 A.D., Silver Denarius, Only $25.00 to open, $3.00 shipping, $5.00 O/S Paypal preferred, ewithers1969@comcast.net
Caracalla, 198 - 217 A.D.
Silver Denarius
Rome 196 - 198 A.D. (As Caesar), RIC 6
3.24 gr., 17 mm.
Obv. : "M AVR ANTON CAES PONTIF"
Draped and cuirassed bare head right.
Rev.: “DESTINATO IMPERAT"
Lituus, apex, bucaranium, and simplum.
Although for expediency, Severus was to name Clodius ALbinus as Caesar, and putative heir, this early issue of Caracalla as Caesar put the lie to that, as it clearly points out Caracalla as the true heir to Severus' Principate. This coin is a much nicer then usual example of this historical type, well centered on a fairly broad and nicely shaped flan. Like all early Severan Denarii, this type is usually seen on a smallish, mishapen flan.
Buy more then one coin from me in a given auction, and pay highest individual shipping fee, and add $1.00 for each additional item. ejspoon
